Adur Health Walks (in Shoreham-by-Sea, Southwick and Lancing) - South East
Last updated 19 August 2010
The main walking for health scheme is called 'Take A Step' and we also promote the Primary Care Trust leaflets on independent walking which is called 'A Step in the Right Direction'.
The walks cover three levels in different terrains, either on the seafront, by the River Adur or out on the hills (which includes the South Downs). Some walks start from libraries and surgeries. The libraries encourage membership and offer tea/coffee.
We are trialling a new initiative called 'Stride Out'. This is a faster pace of walk from a specific school in Shoreham at approx 9am from the school gate, twice a week. It is proving popular with the parents. New people are being sought to do the training so that other Stride Out groups can be set up.
The Adur District covers an area between the South Downs and the coast in West Sussex and lies between Worthing and Brighton and Hove. Towns in the district include Shoreham-by-Sea, Southwick, Lancing, Sompting and the smaller areas of Coombes, Fishersgate, Kingston by Sea (or Kingston Buci).
The northern part of the Adur District falls within the newly formed South Downs National Park and many of our walks are in this area of outstanding natural beauty. There are also three Local Nature Reserves (LNR) within the Adur District which include: Mill Hill LNR, Lancing Ring LNR and Shoreham Beach LNR.
Other long distance routes also pass through the district, these include:
The Monarch's Way: a 615 mile (990km) long-distance footpath in England that approximates the escape route taken by King Charles II in 1651 after being defeated in the Battle of Worcester. It ends in Shoreham-by-Sea.
The South Downs Way: which runs for 99 miles (160km) from Winchester, in Hampshire, to Eastbourne, in East Sussex.
The Coastal Link: which runs all the way from the coast at Shoreham-by-Sea to Guildford via Horsham and joins up with the Downs Link. It is a 36.7 mile (58.7km) footpath and bridleway linking the North Downs Way at St Martha's Hill in Surrey with the South Downs Way near Steyning in West Sussex and then on via the Coastal Link to Shoreham-by-Sea.
The Adur District also includes other places of interest such as Shoreham Old Fort, Shoreham Tollbridge, Shoreham Port, Shoreham Airport, RSPB Wildfowl Reserve, Widewater Lagoon and the River Adur. There are also numerous old historic churches to visit.
