The Whickham Walkers Group exists to provide outdoor activity for residents of the area who are over 50 years of age, especially those recovering from illness, by encouraging them to participate in walks and rambling and thereby improve their quality of life.
Our walks
The walks take place on Wednesdays between 9am-4pm starting and finishing at Whickham Community Centre.
It is normal practice to hire a coach, currently at £8 per head, to transport the members to the area to be walked. The use of a coach enables a greater variety of walks, centred on places of interest or national and local trails, to be undertaken. The maximum journey time being about 90 minutes. However, the coach is limited to a capacity of 17 passengers including the driver so a booking system is operated through the treasurer. Maps and leaflets about the walks are available for perusal before and after the walk is complete. The walks are normally between 5-9 miles in length broken down into serveral stages of 1-2 miles when members can leave or rejoin the walk as they wish. There are at least two stops for refreshments which the members provide and carry for themselves.
When a coach is not hired, walks are taken locally from the centre or by making use of public transport to go further afield.
In the near future it is hoped to start a regular programme of short local walks, free of charge, to introduce potential members to the scheme.
