The emphasis of the scheme has always been on the improvement of personal fitness levels through a variety of walking opportunities. The scheme was started in the mid-1990s as an adjunct to a thriving Cardiac Rehabilitation programme.
All walks are led by qualified volunteer walk leaders.
There are 3 levels of walks, as well as evening walks in the summer.
Health Walks These are entry level walks, lasting about an hour, including 20 minutes at an increased speed in the middle of the walk. They take place every Tuesday morning, using 6 local green areas or parks on a monthly rotation. Meet at Solutions Gym to leave at 9.45 am, making use of Tramlink to reach open spaces. Return by 11.15 am
Walking for Health Monthly interest walks, averaging about 5-6 miles in length. Locations vary between town and country. All walks start from a public transport stop, or the Solutions Gym.
Guided Rambles Longer walks, about 6-8 miles at a faster pace, so suitable for fitter walkers. Walks take place on the first Wednesday of each month from a variety of locations.
Evening Walks Monthly evening walks between June and September.
